The First Booking Task I Ever Did — And What I Had No Idea How to Do

Every booking agent has a moment — that first wild, confusing, exhilarating task that throws you straight into the deep end. Mine came long before I had any formal training, any roadmap, or any clue what I was doing. And it happened in the most unexpected way.
I was asked to negotiate an artist’s performance at Elizabeth Taylor’s birthday party.
Yes… that Elizabeth Taylor.
The craziest part? The artist had already been contacted and the buyer had already expressed interest — and then I was handed the phone number and told to take over. I didn’t know the language. I didn’t know the rates. I didn’t know the etiquette. I didn’t even know what questions I was supposed to ask. I just knew I had been dropped into something way bigger than me, and I had to figure it out fast.
So I made the call — completely green, completely unprepared, and completely determined. The conversation didn’t lead to a booking, but it lit something in me. It showed me that even without experience, I could step into real industry situations and hold my own.
That moment gave me the fever — the spark that made me want to keep going, keep learning, and keep showing up in rooms I didn’t feel ready for yet.
And that’s the lesson I now teach artists and new agents every day:
You don’t start with confidence. You earn it by stepping into opportunities before you feel qualified.
You don’t start with expertise. You build it by saying yes before you know how.
And you don’t start with leverage. You create it by showing up, learning fast, and refusing to quit.
If you’re an artist or aspiring booking agent reading this, remember: Your first task won’t feel comfortable. It won’t feel easy. And it definitely won’t feel like you know what you’re doing.
But that’s exactly how the best careers begin.
